The Bare Basket — Houston Grocery Rankings

Houston grocery stores ranked two ways — for today and for this week — by local pricing, daily deals and coupons. Every store gets a what's worth getting list and a score for how well it feeds the healthy bare-necessities basket inside the minimalist diets this house actually eats.

Edition 2 — checked Wednesday, October 28, 2026. This catalog is alive: it updates as new ads, deals and changes are announced. Prices appear only where they were read on the store's own pages; a store whose ad couldn't be read is ranked on its format and says so. In-store prices can vary.

The basket & the diets

The bare basket: eggs · beans · lentils · rice · oats · sardines & fish · cheese · plain Greek yogurt · dark leafy greens · frozen vegetables · fruit & frozen berries · avocado · peanut butter · olive oil · walnuts · milk.

The Base. His foundation plate: eggs, cheese, fish + beans, lentils, rice + fruits and vegetables, dark leafy greens first.

The Brain Table. Two full meals, no snacks: eggs & avocado on greens, blueberry–Greek-yogurt smoothie; then fish, big vegetables, lentils/beans, walnuts, olive oil.

Bare Budget. The cheapest nutrient-dense core: beans, rice, eggs, oats, frozen veg, peanut butter — nutrition per dollar, nothing fancy.

ALDIad unread online — ranked on format

The Base ●●●●○ · Brain Table ●●●○○ · Bare Budget ●●●●●

The minimalist's store by design: small, mostly house-brand, no coupons — the shelf price is the deal. Its weekly ad sits behind store-locator walls from here, so this rank is format-earned; check the in-store ad for the week's Finds.

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: eggs, oats, rice, frozen vegetables and berries, cheese, peanut butter (everyday format — no prices claimed this week)
5

Walmartno weekly circular — everyday pricing

The Base ●●●●○ · Brain Table ●●●○○ · Bare Budget ●●●●○

The deep-basket fallback: everything on the list under one roof at rollback-style everyday prices. No grocery circular to rank deals from — the win is breadth, not a weekly special.

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: the full list, especially rice, beans, oats, frozen veg, eggs and milk at scale (no prices claimed this week)
6

Krogerad unread online — ranked on format

The Base ●●●●○ · Brain Table ●●●○○ · Bare Budget ●●●○○

A digital-coupon store: the real prices live in its app coupons, which could not be read from here this week. Ranked mid-table on format — with the app clipped, Kroger regularly plays higher than this.

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: eggs, milk, cheese, frozen berries and greens when the digital coupons land (check the Kroger app — no prices claimed this week)
7

Fiesta Martad unread online — ranked on format

The Base ●●●●○ · Brain Table ●●○○○ · Bare Budget ●●●●○

Houston's Latino supermarket: produce, beans and rice country, with prices the same online and in store per its own FAQ. Its new site's ad hides behind store selection from here; digital coupons are, in its own words, 'coming soon.'

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: produce, dry beans, rice, avocados and limes (no prices claimed this week)
8

Sprouts Farmers Marketflyer unread online — ranked on format

The Base ●●●●○ · Brain Table ●●●●○ · Bare Budget ●●○○○

The produce-and-natural-foods specialist — greens, berries, nuts and bulk bins fit the Brain Table well. Its flyer lives in its app/interactive viewer, unread from here this week.

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: leafy greens, berries, walnuts and bulk grains when its BOGO-style flyer hits (check the app — no prices claimed this week)
9

Randallslocal page read ✓ · priced deals in app

The Base ●●●○○ · Brain Table ●●○○○ · Bare Budget ●●○○○

Worth it for some of its deals — Raphael's call, and the chain's own shape backs it: shelf prices run high, but Randalls for U digital deals and its weekly ad specials are where it competes. A deal-day store, not an everyday store. Checked specifically for Edition 2: its priced ad and for-U deals still live inside its app, unread from here — but its official local page puts two real mechanics on the record, including a Sunday one that lands inside this week (Sunday, Nov 1).

Worth getting:

  • Wear any pro football jersey on a Sunday — 10% off your grocery purchase (official local page; every Sunday this football season, thru Jan 31, 2027)
  • Schedule & Save subscriptions — extra 5% off · flu shot: 10% off a $40+ grocery purchase, max $20 (thru Dec 31, 2026)
  • Basket strengths: whatever the week's for-U digital deals touch — eggs, cheese and packaged staples rotate through (check the app — no prices claimed this week)
10

Trader Joe'sno ads, no coupons — by its own policy

The Base ●●●●○ · Brain Table ●●●○○ · Bare Budget ●●●○○

In the chain's own words: 'No coupons. No discounts… the best everyday values, every day.' Nothing to clip and nothing to chase — frozen vegetables and fruit, nuts and pantry staples are its quiet basket strengths.

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: frozen vegetables & berries, nuts, cheese, pantry staples at flat everyday prices (no prices claimed this week)
11

Houston-local, 25 stores, and the only no-limit coupon wall in the catalog: bright-yellow shelf coupons, dollars off eggs, milk, cheese and yogurt, running through December 29. Small savings per item, real ones across a month.

Worth getting:

  • 50¢ off Pete & Gerry's 18 ct / Nellie's eggs · $1 off LALA cheese · $1 off Parmalat yogurt · 25¢ off Oak Farms gallon milk (Swift Savings, thru Dec 29, no limit)

Grocery is the side aisle here. Target Circle percentage-off offers plus 5% with its card can win a single item, but it is not a bare-basket store this week.

Worth getting:

  • Basket strengths: single-item Circle offers on pantry staples (check the app per store — no prices claimed this week)

Every other brand — reviewed

Practically every grocery brand with a Houston presence gets a review here, ranked or not.

Sam's Club

Membership warehouse. Instant Savings apply automatically at checkout — no clipping. Bulk rice, oats, olive oil, frozen berries, eggs and salmon are the natural fits; the membership fee and pack sizes are the caveat. Flyer not price-verified this week.

Costco

Membership warehouse with the strongest pantry reputation of the two clubs (Kirkland olive oil and nuts). Member-Only Savings apply automatically; item limits printed per deal. Not price-verified this week.

99 Ranch Market

The Asian specialist: jasmine rice, bok choy and other Asian greens, whole fish and tofu are its basket strengths. Its Fri–Thu flyer exists but wasn't readable on its own site — judge it in store.

H Mart

The Korean pantry stop: kimchi, tofu, Asian greens, rice and seafood depth. Weekly ads and a loyalty program live on its site; the store ad wasn't readable in priced form this week.

Sellers Bros.

Houston-local since 1921. Its Wed–Tue circular runs aggressive produce, eggs, cheese and fish loss-leaders — an old-school value grocer. Current ad not read on its own site; check the circular in store.

La Michoacana Meat Market

A carnicería first — for this basket it's the produce loss-leaders (avocados, limes), queso fresco, beans and tortillas that matter. Not a full-basket store.

Phoenicia Specialty Foods

No flyer by design — a 55,000 sq ft West Houston importer with 10,000+ products from 50+ countries. The olive-oil, cheese and grains specialist of this whole catalog; judged in store, not by ads.

Brookshire Brothers

Employee-owned East Texas chain with a Wed–Tue ad. Houston presence is metro-edge only — a fine stop if one sits on your route, not an in-town Alief option.

El Rancho Supermercado

NOT RANKED — the company's own store list shows its Texas stores in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and Odessa, none in Houston. Listed here so the record stays straight; if a Houston address opens, it joins the rankings.

How this catalog stays honest

Prices were checked on the stores' own weekly-ad, deals and category pages on the date stamped above. H-E-B and Joe V's ads were read in full; Whole Foods prices are its 365 everyday online list (its own site notes in-store prices may vary) and its Houston flyer lives in its app; Food Town's Swift Savings coupons were read on its site. Kroger, ALDI, Walmart, Fiesta Mart, Randalls, Sprouts and Target keep this week's priced ads behind app/store-selection walls — they are marked unread, ranked on format, and carry no invented prices. Randalls' official local store page was read for its standing mechanics (for U, Schedule & Save, Sunday jersey discount). Trader Joe's and Phoenicia publish no weekly ad at all, by design.
